Ski holidays in Cortina are not only popular with Italians not also with skiers from all over Europe. It is probably the most famous ski resort in Italy thanks to hosting the Winter Olympics in 1956, alongside being the setting for many of the scenes filmed in the classic James Bond film "For Your Eyes Only". Cortina is a beautiful little Alpine town and it is easy to see why is was chosen for the film. It oozes elegance and class and is well-deserving of its nickname, the "Queen of the Dolomites". Another reason for Cortina's fame is that for the last 18 years they have hosted the Women's World Cup Down Hill in January. So if you are looking to go skiing in Cortina in January then book up early!
Sitting within a bowl amongst the stunning mountain scenery of the Dolomites you feel completely surrounded by the mountains once you step out onto the streets of Cortina. No matter which direction you look there is a stunning back drop. As you might expect, the skiing in Cortina is located on nearly all sides as well, meaning that you can easily spend your days chasing the sun. No matter what time of day there is nearly always a few sunny slopes to be found. There are 3 main areas that make up the skiing in Cortina. The Cortina Cube (Faloria, Mietres and Crystal) alongside with Lagazuoi-5 Torri and Tofana. They can all easy be accessed via lift or the free ski bus.
The local lift pass covers all of the above ski areas but you can also purchase a full area pass which allows you to ski in any of the resorts within the Dolomites. The main attraction of this is the massive Sella Ronda Ski Circuit. As the name suggests it is a huge circuit of interlinked ski resorts offering an almost endless amount of skiing. It is actually possible to ski onto the Sella Ronda circuit from Cortina via a route known as the hidden valley but it is a serious ski only recommended for experienced skiers and hiring a guide is highly advisable. However, you can't ski back so a taxi will be required for one part of the journey.
If you are struggling to decide where to stay in Cortina then why not give our iSki sales team a call and see if we can help do some of the hard work for you.
Cortina has one of the best beginners ski areas on offer in the Dolomites. The Socrepes area has more than 50% of the runs being classed as easy as well as some slightly harder runs which are great for beginner skiers to progress onto.
The runs towards the top of Tofana and Pomedes are ideal for intermediate skiers. The scenery is fantastic are there is a nice variety of blue and red runs. The vertical drop from the top of Tofana down to Pocol is roughly 1500m. The slopes right at the top are a bit more open to the elements but generally have the best snow conditions whilst there are plenty of tree lines pistes lower down.
Advanced skiers will enjoy the black runs on offer in the Lagazuoi 5 Torri area as well as the Faloria area and the red run (known as the Hidden Valley) which runs down from the Passo Falzarego cable car is also a must ski for any advanced skier on holiday in Cortina. Advanced skiers will definitely want to purchase a full area lift pass thus allowing them to ski the famous Sella Ronda ski circuit as well.
There is plenty of fun to be found for snowboarders on holiday in Cortina. The tree-lined cruisey runs from Pomedes down to Pocol are great for those looking for a few spots to practice jibs or just gently cruise around and soak up the beautiful scenery. For those looking for something a bit more adrenaline-fuelled, you will want to head over to the Faloria area where they build the snow park. The Snow park is serviced by a 4 seater chair lift and is divided into two lines, one easy line and one medium line. It is not the biggest park in the world but will keep must intermediate to upper-intermediate snowboarders happy during the course of weeks snowboarding holiday on Cortina.
Some of the best off-piste skiing in Cortina is to be found in the Lagazuoi 5 Torri area. There are some great descents (snow conditions permitting) and the locals have names for them all. Bus di Tofana (Tofana’s Hole) is a great choice on the Tofana side and offers 1900m of vertical drop, while Canali Lagazuoi (Lagazuoi Couloirs) and 5 Torri Boa (5 Towers) are ones to look out for in the Lagazuoi 5 Torri area. You have to be careful not to get stopped by ski patrols when skiing of piste in Italy so it is highly recommended to hire a guide if you want to stay safe and stay on the right side of the law.

The après ski on offer in Cortina is not the loud and in your face type do après ski that you get in the big Austrian and French ski resorts. There are plenty of bars in the town to keep you busy but there are no piste-side umbrella bars with loud music and people dancing on tables. It is all about fine wining and fine dining in Cortina. Some of the on-mountain restaurants serve up some fantastic food. Once you have done days skiing plus eaten and drank to your heart's content during the day it is off home for a good feed and so,e more wine before heading out later on in the evening to hit a few bars and maybe even end up in one of the late-night piano bars.
Besides the unique nightlife, Cortina is unique in many other ways as well. One of these unique aspects is the number of fur shops that you see a couple with the number if people that you see out and about warring all manner of animal skins. Like it or detest it, it is definitely something that you do not see in all ski resorts. There is also a whole array of other shops to be found as well along with the crown jewel being the La Cooperativa di Cortina. It classes itself as "not just a department store" but rather "the emblems of Cortina".
