There’s a lot going on at the Hotel Palace. It's a little bigger than you may expect from an Austrian hotel – which is handy as it’s very popular. In a quiet spot on the edge of a park, surrounding the resort's thermal spa centre, the location is perfect if you’re after a bit of peace in the evening. And there's a stop just outside the hotel for the free bus, which will take you into the centre of Bad Hofgastein and over to the ski lifts too, so getting around is simple. The hotel has its own large indoor thermal pool and an impressive spa complex, complete with saunas, steam bath and a salt inhalation cave. And sport and fitness is taken care of too – there are indoor tennis courts, aqua-gymnastic sessions and a fitness room with all the essentials to keep in shape. There's also an entertainment programme with live music and a games room with pool and table tennis, so there's plenty to do after a day on the slopes. In the evening, there's a large international dinner buffet with plenty of choice – even for the pickiest of diners. The rooms are both functional and spacious, but if you choose the small rooms for a couple, please be aware that the beds are very cosy – measuring around 140cm in width and are fixed in the corner of the room.

The Gastein area is part of the much larger Ski Amadé area with 860km of pistes it is the largest in Austria. The Gastein area is made up of 4 sections: (1) Schlossalm - Angertal – Stubnerkogel, 860m to 2300m, (2) Sportgastein 1590m to 2700m, (3) Graukogel 1079 to 2007m, (4) Dorfgastein – Großarltal 850m to 2003m. Each of these areas offers different terrain and is better suited for different type of skier or snowboarders.
In recent years there has been much spending on the improvement of the beginner areas and nursery runs. The best areas for nursery runs are the Skizentrum Angertal and Bucheban. Also new conveyer belts for children have been introduced to help them learn.
Of the 4 sections the best area for intermediates are the Schlossalm - Angertal – Stubnerkogel and Dorfgastein – Großarltal. Here the longest run in the Gastein area is, the massive 8 Km Hohe Scharte Nord.
The Sportgastein is the highest of the 4 areas and also the most popular with serious skiers, when conditions are right the off piste is unbelievable.
In 2012 the Gastein snowpark was opened, it can be found on the Stubnermulde on the Stubnerkogel. It is a great area to either show off or develop your skill on, and for those who like to watch try the Stubner Alm a ski hut that is near by.
