• Ski to and from the hotel on a blue run. • Switch up your après fun with bowling and shuffleboard. • Historic hotel with a mix of traditional and up-to-date décor. Heaps of history and fab modern facilities – that’s the Dr. Holms hotel. The building overlooks the village and backs onto the slopes, so you can ski straight off each morning. Or, if it’s your first time, the nursery area is a 2-minute stroll away. After skiing, spend your après hours at the hotel’s bowling alley, which is decked out like an American diner with red leather booths and a classic jukebox. Then keep the fun going in the 1909 Sportsbar, where you’ve got pub games like shuffleboard. Prefer something more laid-back? Try the spa. There’s a steam room, sauna and outdoor hot tub that's perfect for a post-piste soak. The hotel itself dates back to 1909, and there are plenty of nods to yesteryear dotted around, like the chandeliers and leather armchairs in the lounge and reading room. Upstairs, the bedrooms are decorated in a mix of styles. Some have an on-trend grey colour scheme and plush fabrics, while others keep things simple with wooden furniture and cream walls. Food-wise, you’ll get a buffet spread to set you up each morning, and if you fancy making evening meals hassle-free, you can upgrade to half board to get those included too.

Norway’s charming all-rounder for families, beginners, and cross-country lovers
Located halfway between Oslo and Bergen, Geilo is one of Norway’s most beloved ski resorts, offering a perfect blend of alpine fun, serene landscapes, and world-class Nordic hospitality. With its relaxed vibe, family-friendly facilities, and extensive ski terrain, Geilo is ideal for both first-timers and seasoned winter holidaymakers.
Geilo is known for its excellent ski schools, gentle green and blue slopes, and dedicated children’s areas. It’s the perfect place for families and those just learning to ski or snowboard.
The resort offers over 35km of alpine slopes across two main ski areas connected by a regular ski bus. From easy runs to more technical red and black pistes, there’s something for every level of skier.
With more than 220km of groomed cross-country trails, Geilo is also a haven for Nordic skiing enthusiasts, offering scenic routes through forests, across frozen lakes, and along open mountain plateaus.
Geilo combines traditional mountain lodges and cozy cabins with modern hotels and spa facilities, all surrounded by picturesque winter scenery. The town itself has a welcoming, small-town feel with local shops, cafes, and restaurants.
There’s more to Geilo than skiing. Try dog sledding, snowshoeing, tobogganing, or visit a nearby ice fishing spot. Relax after a day on the slopes in a luxury spa or enjoy hearty Norwegian cuisine by the fire.
Geilo is easily accessible by train from both Oslo and Bergen, with a scenic journey through Norway’s snowy mountains. Alternatively, it’s a 3.5–4 hour drive from either city, making it a convenient winter destination for international travellers.
Whether you’re looking for a relaxing winter break, a first-time ski experience, or a family-friendly adventure, Geilo Ski Resort offers the perfect combination of charm, snow, and comfort. Explore our latest Geilo ski packages and book your Norwegian winter escape today.
The Geilo ski area spans 34km of pistes across both sides of the valley – the Geilo Centre and Vestlia areas – connected by a free ski bus. This Norwegian ski resort is perfect for beginners and families, with plenty of wide green and blue runs, well-maintained slopes, and a peaceful atmosphere. Intermediate skiers will find some enjoyable red runs, while advanced skiers can explore a few black pistes and mogul fields. Snow reliability is excellent thanks to Geilo’s northern location, and quiet slopes mean more time skiing and less time queuing.
Explore the resort on the Geilo High Five round trip, a scenic route that covers the best slopes, panoramic views, and ideal lunch spots. For extra ski time, Geilo also offers evening skiing twice a week on floodlit runs.
Geilo is one of the best ski resorts in Norway for beginners. The slopes are gentle, tree-lined, and well-groomed – ideal for learning in a calm and picturesque setting. First-time skiers can start in the Slaatta or Vestlia nursery areas, located conveniently near the village. As skills improve, you can progress to longer green and blue runs in the Vestlia and Havsdalen areas, including scenic top-to-bottom descents suitable for novices.
Geilo offers a solid selection of blue and red pistes for intermediate skiers. Start in the quieter zones like Havsdalshovda and Kikuttoppen, then test your skills on steeper runs such as Red 26 and the mogul field on Red 22. When the sun sets, continue the fun with night skiing under the lights, available two evenings a week.
While Geilo is best suited to beginner and intermediate levels, there are a few challenging red and black runs for experienced skiers looking to add variety to their trip. The terrain is limited but enjoyable for a short advanced session or day trip.
Snowboarders in Geilo are well catered for, especially beginners who can take advantage of dedicated instruction through the local ski schools. Experienced boarders will enjoy the relaxed riding across varied terrain, although it’s worth noting that many lifts are drag lifts. Freestyle snowboarders can visit one of three snow parks, offering jumps, rails, and features for all levels.
