Chalet Verwall (pronounced ‘Fair-val’) makes an excellent choice for your family ski holiday, and is proving a tremendous hit with ski families. The Verwall’s location simply could not be bettered, at the end of a short, quiet cul-de-sac off Obergurgl’s main street, with the easiest possible access to and from the slopes, and accommodation ideally suited to families, with all suites having two separate sleeping areas (Suite 1 has three!), private facilities and most have a small kitchenette. Just 30m from the chalet Verwall ski-room door, you can step into your bindings and ski down to the Festkogel gondola – one of the area’s main high-speed lifts, and your best route straight up into the Obergurgl half of the ski area. The ski-school meeting point is also here. From here, the choice is yours, either to ski the varied slopes above the village, or to take a blue or red run to the ‘Top Express’ gondola and whizz across to the wide open slopes of Hochgurgl. The dining-room on the ground floor provides an ideal setting for adult dinner in the evenings, and can be a little snug at breakfast time when we have a full house! The separate lounge is up on the top floor, with quirky ‘hobbit-size’ doorway and sloping ceilings. Like the comfortable family suites themselves, the dining-room is furnished in traditional Tyrolean style. Reflecting the chalet’s layout, for the most convivial evening atmosphere (and the least times up and down stairs!), our 4-course adult evening meals here vary slightly from the norm, with a daily cheeseboard as the fourth course, replacing our normal pre-dinner canapés and apéritif.

Fine Cuisine at Chalet Verwall
Includes a skiers' buffet breakfast to start your day, afternoon tea to welcome you 'home', and 4- or 5-course evening meals with wine and coffee to complete the evening six days a week.
For six days of the week the staff prepare all your meals for you as described. The majority of parents feel that young children can inhibit the dinner-party atmosphere at evening meals, especially if they are over-tired, so children under 13 years are served High Tea at around 5.30pm. They are not then permitted to join adult dinner, as they are generally happier either getting some rest ready for tomorrow’s adventures, or if 6 years old or more, joining our child care staff in Cocoa Club.
Family Dining Chalets
For those families who prefer to eat together with their younger children, we offer our Family Dining option in selected chalet of up to 12 beds, if you book the whole chalet for your own party, subject to chalet suitability. Everyone then eats together in the evening, starting at 6.30-7.00pm. The meals are based on our adult menus, with some flexibility for younger taste buds, although not a complete ‘à la carte’ choice! The additional charge for changing meals to Family Dining is £39 per child.
On their one day off per week, your host in chalets will prepare a Continental-style breakfast which will be left for you to help yourselves. That evening, you and your family then have the chance to eat out in one of the local cafés or restaurants, which your Reps will be happy to help you arrange.
Breakfast
A good breakfast is essential on a ski holiday, so we provide both a cooked breakfast including your choice of bacon, eggs, sausages and beans, as well as a continental selection with a choice of cereals or porridge, fruit juices, plentiful tea, coffee and bread (and croissants in France), cold meats, cheese and preserves, which is normally presented buffet-style for you to help yourself. On our staff’s one day off a week, only the continental breakfast will be provided.
Piste Picnics
Our Chalet Hotel teams can also prepare a packed lunch for you on request, at a small local charge. For those keen to keep their Eurospending to an absolute minimum, this is the ideal way to keep your costs down!
Afternoon Tea
The traditional ‘welcome home’ after a day on the slopes will be laid out for you in your chalet, ready for your return, every day except the team’s one day off each week. A good cup of tea or coffee is the perfect accompaniment to a delicious slice of freshly home-baked cake – different every day!
Children’s High Tea
High Tea provides children under 13 with a healthy menu, but tailored more towards children’s tastes than our main adult dinner, and puréed food is also always available for infants on request. Parents are asked to accompany their children under 36 months at High Tea please, whilst children from 3-12 years will be supervised by the staff.
Adult Dinner in Chalets
Four-course dinners for adults (and children 13 and over only) start with canapés and an apéritif, followed by an appetiser, main course and dessert. The meal is accompanied by a choice of wines, unlimited during the meal service, with freshly chilled water also always available, and followed by complimentary coffee or tea with chocolates to round off your evening.
Special Diets
Vegetarian options are always on our ‘Culinary Choice’ menu in our Chalet Hotels, and are available in our chalets if you advise us in advance. Other special diets can generally be catered for at a cost of £35 per person per week. Any dietary requirements must be advised to us at the time of booking in order for us to be fully prepared.
Situated in the Otz Valley, Obergurgl is one of Austria's most desirable ski holiday locations because of the guarantee of snow throughout the winter season.
Obergurgl is the highest parish in Austria with a resort height of 1930m and allows skiing all the way up to 3080m.
You might also want to check out the accommodation on offer in the adjoining resort of Hochgurgl, located a little further up the valley at a resort height of 2150m.
The season traditionally lasts all the way from November through until May, although package holiday accommodation can normally be booked from mid-December through until mid to late April.
The Otz Valley is very picturesque and Obergurgl has managed to retain a very traditional, relaxed and intimate feel, in part due to the lack of traffic.
There is no through traffic in the centre of the resort, which gives it the ambience of a winter wonder land and the architecture is in an attractive Tyrolean style.
Even as the resort has grown this style has been adhered to and, though there are many large hotels in Obergurgl, they are all very tastefully built.
When looking for accommodation in the area you’ll notice that the majority of the accommodation consists of high-end hotels.
Properties like the Hotel Edelweiss & Gurgl and the Hotel Alpina are extremely popular and have a vast number of repeat clients who return year after year.
These hotels certainly aren't cheap but you do get a lot for your money! If your budget does not quite stretch to a four star or a five star hotel then you might want to look at better value option such as Hotel Austria. You might also want to look at the catered chalets that Obergurgl has to offer. A prime example would be the Chalet Christophorus – great value for money!
Even though Obergurgl is one of the most famous ski resorts in Austria, it hasn’t been overdeveloped.
The resort centre is still quite small and compact which really allows you to get to know the village and by the end of your ski holiday in Obergurgl you’ll feel very much at home.
And like many before you, you will no doubt be ready to book again for the next winter season.
The skiing in Obergurgl is predominantly suited to beginners and intermediates, though expert skiers will still find plenty to keep themselves entertained. The resort boasts a fast and modern lift system. It is a rarity that you ever get queues for the lifts even during the peak school holiday dates.
There are three main ski areas, Hohe Mut, Festkogl, and Hochgurgl, which in combination offer a great selection of blue and red runs with one or two daredevil black runs into the bargain.
The skiing in Obergurgl is perfect for learning to ski. The beginner lift at Mahdstuhl is great for absolute novices as is the Wiensenlift towards the low end of town.
The blue pistes running down toward the village centre and close to the Rosskar lift are also great for those still finding their ski legs and give you a brilliant area to move into after completing your first few lessons.
With plenty of long and spacious red and blue runs, the intermediate skiing in Obergurgl is great. Austrian pistes are numbered rather than having names like French runs and blue runs 15, 5 and 6, all on the Obergurgl side of the region, are ideal for intermediate skiers looking to build their confidence.
If, on the other hand, you’re a confident intermediate-tier skier you’ll probably want to challenge yourself on the red runs and a prime example is piste 1 running all the way from top to bottom of the Festkogl lift.
With that said, whether you consider yourself to be lower or upper intermediate you’ll also want to check out the slopes on offer on the Hochgurgl side as there are also loads of great red and blue runs over there as well.
The advanced skier on holiday in Obergurgl should be on the lookout for hidden gems, as there are plenty to find. There are half a dozen black runs spread throughout the area plus some great off piste opportunities.
You can also go looking for challenging moguls at the top of the Hohe Mut area.
On top of this you even have the option of doing a ski away day in Solden (although you’ll have to extend your lift pass for the day, and a small charge is involved) which offers you an extra 150km of piste to explore.
Given its fantastic snow record, Obergurgl is a fantastic place to ski powder. There’s plenty of off piste to be explored although it’s worth your while to hire a local guide.
What’s more, the more advanced ski school groups sometimes venture off piste if there has been a fresh snowfall.
The tree skiing around the Steinmannlift is also well worth checking out under the right conditions.
Obergurgl’s a good resort for snowboarders unless you only want to ride park. There are a few good jumps in the Festkogl but, if you’re happy riding wide open pistes with plenty of space to carve and you love floating through powder on your snowboard, then Obergurgl is definitely the place to head.

Chalet Verwall
Tell us roughly when you want to go and who is coming, and we will price it with the operators for you.
No obligation. One of the team will come back to you the same day where we can.
As you’d expect from an Austrian ski resort, the après ski scene in Obergurgl is vibrant with plenty of lively mountain bars and restaurants.
Apres ski at the Nederhutte is famously the place to be but you should also check out Krump'n Stadl and Josl Keller.
If you’re looking for a special dining experience you need to make time to see the views from the 'Top Mountain Star' restaurant.
Nightlife in Obergurgl is quite quiet with most of the night time activity revolving around a few bars in the town centre and the hotel bars. For something a little bit different, why not try out the indoor golf or maybe ice skating or curling. You can even do night skiing in Obergurgl if all you want do to is ski, ski, ski!
There are plenty of other ways to get out and about and enjoy the scenery, including cleared winter walks, snow shoeing, and the toboggan run at Hochgurgl. But if that isn’t what you want to do, we recommend the bowling alley.
