A warm welcome awaits you at the charming Bergwell Dorfschmiede Hotel, which gets excellent reviews for the great value it offers and handy position. Traditionally Tyrolean inside and out, the hotel feels cosy and rustic, and the rooms are simple, comfortable and spotlessly maintained. St Johann is a lovely little Austrian ski resorts with traditional Tirolian architecture and a real alpine feel to it. It has a classic “picture postcard village centre so if you are looking to avoid the horrible high rise modern ski resorts then St Johann may well be right up your street. St Johann is also extremely family friendly and the slopes are rarely over crowed as it is not as fashionable as many nearby resorts such as Kitzbuhel. In total there is just over 40km of piste on the local slopes which makes a ski holiday in St Johann ideal for beginner and intermediate skiers. However, it is also worth noting that St Johann belongs to a ski area known as the Schneewinkel which is a network of resorts that offers 170km of piste. After you have used the local slopes for 3 days your lift passes automatically upgrades to the Schneewinkel area so advanced skiers who are happy to take a bus ride of two can easily access extra skiing. You can even upgrade your pass to the Kitzbuheler Alpen AllStarCard which then gives you access to 10 ski areas and 1000km of piste. The main areas of interest which can easily be reach from St Johann are the KitzSki (Kitzbuhel + others) and the Ski Welt.
Many of the slopes in St Johann are north facing so although the resort is not the heighest in the world, it still have a good snow record as the north facing slopes hold their snow well. There is also a good selection of cross-country skiing on offer which makes St Johann a great location for skiers who want a mixture of downhill and cross-country. In total there is 275km of cross-country ski trails. St Johann is also only 1 hour 20 minutes from Salzburg airport so it is a good destination for those who are looking for a short transfer as well.

There are nursery slopes located at both ends of the village there is easy access skiing for beginner no matter which side of the village you are staying in. Once you have progressed from the nursery slopes there are plenty of nice long and easy blues throughout the area.
Intermediates will love the combination of long blue and red runs on offer in St Johann. The red runs down from Harschbichl and Jodlalm will be of particular interest. After 3 days of skiing on the local slopes the ski pass is automatically upgraded to the Schneewinkel area so from 4 onwards you can get the free ski bus to some of the neighbouring resorts, such as Steinplatte and St Jakob, to go in search of even more skiing (up to 170km).
Advanced skiers in St Johann will easily ski out all of the local slopes within a day so we would advise booking the Schneewinkl pass (170km of skiing) for the full duration of your holiday or maybe even the huge Kitzbuheler AllStarCard instead (1000km of piste over 10 ski area, notably the KitzSki and the SkiWelt). However, make sure you check out the long black slope which runs from just below Harschbichl all the way down to Oberndorf before looking further afield.
As with skiing St Johann is great for beginner and intermediate snowboarding with few queues and nice long gentle slopes with a good variety of red and blues on offer. More advanced snowboarders will be impressed by the FunSlope St Johann snowpark which is built and maintained by Qparks who are well know for providing some of the best snowparks all around Europe.
St Johann has 275km of cross-country ski trails available this making it a great destination for cross-country skiing. The fact that it has over 40km of local downhill skiing on offer, and access to even more downhill with an extended lift pass, makes St Johann the perfect resort for groups who have some cross-country skiers and some downhill skiers.
